Rather than setting up new students manually on a one by one basis a spreadsheet can be created with a list of users that are then able to be imported into the system.
This can be a complex process. We will describe a simplified procedure below, however if you want to fully understand the options see the knowledge base article.
To keep the process simple we ensure we have created the Group first and we will only import users for that group.
Download the sample csv file.
In this file fill in the user_login (username), user_email, first_name, last_name and leave all the other fields blank.
Go to Users->Import Users
Read the instructions tab to get an overview of the process, however we will give our recommended settings to keep the process as simple as possible.
Click on the Options tab.
Use the following selections:
- Default User Role should be student
- DO NOT select a default Course as this will be set by the Group selection
- Select the Group that these students are to be enrolled in as the default.
Click on the Email Settings tab.
Edit the email template to suit your preferences.
Note we have assumed that there will not be existing users in the file for simplicity. If you have existing users that you wish to import you will need to configure the settings to accommodate this situation or to adjust their details manually.
You should now be ready to import.
Click on the Import Users tab.
Check the settings and then upload the file. You can now double check what will import. If it looks correct then run the import.
